Out-of-area prescriptions

  • Most chain pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens) can fill prescriptions from out-of-state providers. Bring the original prescription or ask your doctor to send it electronically.
  • Controlled substances (certain pain medications, ADHD medications) have stricter rules. Call the pharmacy before assuming they can fill an out-of-state controlled prescription.
  • If you run out of a maintenance medication, call your home provider first — they may be able to send a short-term supply to a local pharmacy.
  • Ask the pharmacy whether your insurance will cover a fill at an out-of-network location, or whether you will need to pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement.
